What is involuntary manslaughter?

I don't think that scenario would be involuntary manslaughter. It would probably be voluntary manslaughter, as you did it on purpose. The sentence probably wouldn't be too terribly heavy, but it begs the question of why the person didn't take whatever weapon they were given to kill the hostage and use it on the hostage taker.
