Hurt my hand, not sure what's wrong?

While playing cards, my thumb got smashed onto the table, immediately turned blue and purple, and swelled up like a balloon. It also went numb for a few days, except for a painful lump under the joint that has continued to grow since it got smashed. The color has improved a little and the swelling had gone down, but the lump had remained painful to the slightest touch and has continued to grow. I can move my thumb, ask its not broken, I was told possible bad ligament tears, but I'm really not sure what's wrong. Before I got back to medical I was going to get a few possible outside views on what I might've done to it.
